XXI. 9:45 AM, LLU, LITTLE HAVANA

“Shooter!” Kage called out as he and Alexa dove for the tables on either side of the open corridor.

Kage’s hand moved to grab his weapon as he heard shouts and screams from outside the door. He dared a look to see that there were three small caliber holes right through the door, letting in shafts of light and noise...and there was Joachim Suarez, on the ground, lying face down in the middle of the corridor.

“Shit! Suarez down! Wounded civilian!” Kage shouted, flinging himself forward as he held his pistol up, but Alexa was faster than he was. For all of her small size, she had always been the faster of the two. She had rolled to Suarez’s side, crouching there as she checked his pulse, one hand holding a phone to the side of her head.

“Emergency dispatch. All channels. We’ve got an active shooter. One civilian down. We need armed response, ambulances… No, I don’t know the situation as yet,” she rattled off as Kage saw Joachim cough and splutter weakly as a red stain spread across the floor.

“Stay with him! I’m securing the area!” Kage said, leaping past them as he charged towards the door, flattening himself by the wall for a moment before he edged it open with the side of one hand, holding his pistol at eye level.

It was utter chaos out there, as people were running across the street, screaming. The cafe tables were overturned, and there were people huddling behind them, and across the street was a park where more people were running for their lives. One car, a small blue thing with gold rims had swerved to a halt and half jumped the sidewalk.

But there were also new arrivals to the street, Kage saw. Two white pick-up trucks with people scattered all around, and from the looks of them, they appeared to be the same ones who had attended the counter demonstration just the other day. Kage saw a lot of biker vests and heavy black-ink tattoos. One of the pick-ups (which had swerved to hit a pillar) held a Keep Florida Free flag, draped over its back.

“What happened? Where’s the shooter?” Kage called out as he threw himself forward, rolling on the floor and hit the first of the cafe’s upturned tables. A quick look behind him and he saw that there were more people behind him in the cafe, lying on the floor or pressing themselves at the back of the room.

The counter-protesters were also appearing to run to hide behind their vehicles, Kage noticed. It looked as though they were just as scared as the people of Little Havana were, whatever their original intentions had been.

“FBI! Where’s the shooter?” Kage shouted once more, as the woman with the frizzy hair—the same woman who had mocked him earlier—screamed from where she was hiding beside a refrigerated snacks bin.

“It was a drive-by! White guys on pick-ups, drove up, started shooting!” She was hollering as Kage turned back around and instantly thought that was only half the truth.
